Dwight Yorke: What Harry Kane Would Bring To United Is Priceless

As the Harry Kane transfer saga continues one former Man United forward has urged the club to do whatever it takes to land the England star.

Here at BoyleSports we had the pleasure of interviewing former Man United star Dwight Yorke. A key player in Man United’s treble winning team, Yorke gave us his opinions on the big stories surrounding Man United at this time.

Yorke pinpointed striker as an area of concern for the club and told us what United should do to address it. He also gave his take on Wout Weghorst’s spell at Old Trafford, Rashford’s legacy and what Haaland needs to do next season to not be considered a failed season for neighbours City.

Man United’s Striker Situation A Concern

Q. With reports suggesting Harry Kane has agreed terms to join Bayern Munich, does it worry you about the striker situation for Man United?

If Harry Kane goes to Bayern Munich, it does concern me with the striker situation at Man United. The striker position is probably the main reason that stopped us from getting close to Man City in the end.

You can’t play the game without a real number nine, even with Pep Guardiola’s false nine before, the striker position is very traditional in the Premier League. With the Kane scenario, we should have spent £150m on Erling Haaland when we had the chance under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but we spent money on other players in different positions.

I’m not saying to go and spend £150m on Kane but Man United should act like the big club they are and go make the deal happen. Bayern Munich is a huge club, so Man United will have to do what’s necessary to bring Kane in, we know what he brings to the table, it’s priceless.

Wout Weghorst Didn’t Live Up To Expectations

Q. Are you glad to see the back of Wout Weghorst after Man United announced they won’t be buying him after his loan spell?

It was clear to everyone that Wout Weghorst is what he is. He had a great opportunity to show what he can do at the highest level, and he certainly did not lack in trying, but at Man United, you can get exposed.

Unless you’re scoring goals as a striker, people are going to call you out and that’s how it is. I didn’t have to say anything, he knew and everyone did that he didn’t live up to expectations.

Rashford Contract Extension Better Than Any New Signing

Q. Is extending Rashford’s contract at Man United as good as signing anyone on the market right now?

Extending Marcus Rashford contract at Man United is better than any new signing, 100%. The boy has talent, I’m his biggest fan and he’s proved his doubters wrong. As long as Rashford is focused and happy, obviously doesn’t get ahead of himself, but keeps his focus then he’ll always perform.

I’m sure Rashford will want to be a Man United legend, but it’s hard to get into that category because of the number of players who spent years winning trophies at the club. Rashford needs to be mindful of that, to start adding trophies to his name.

Rashford Can Compete For The Ballon d’Or

Q. If Rashford continues his form, could he compete for the Ballon d’Or?

I could see Marcus Rashford compete for the Ballon d’Or, why not? If I was in his position, that would be the aim now that Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are out of the equation. Rashford will want to be closer to Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland, those are his competitors and rivals.

Neymar is still there, but I’d focus on competing with Mbappe and Haaland because they’ll be the best players in the world for the next few years, so I’d keep an eye on them if I was him. Rashford has the platform, he plays for Man United and he’s English, it doesn’t get much better than that, it’s down to him as an individual.

Haaland Must Live Up To High Standards He’s Set

Q. Do you think Erling Haaland will be deemed to have a failure of a season if he doesn’t match his 36 Premier League goals next season?

If Erling Haaland doesn’t score more than 52 goals in all competitions like he did last season, then his season will be seen as a failure and people will say he’s not as prolific as he used to be, even if he scored 49 goals.

Haaland started off his Premier League career with back-to-back hat-tricks, if he doesn’t do that next year then people will be scratching their heads because that’s the standard he’s set. It’s how it is, his rampage of goals has set high expectations and people will say he’s had a poor season if he doesn’t match his goal record.

It’s the cons of being a striker, but Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo hit their numbers every year and that’s why they’re the greats of the sport.
