AUSTRALIAN GP Preview

MAX VERSTAPPEN 4/11

The Red Bull driver is the red-hot favourite going into this race following his second-place finish at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix two weeks ago to teammate Sergio Perez. Verstappen was hit by technical problems during the qualifying session meaning he lined up in P15 while Perez started in pole position.

Verstappen flew through the field but ended up finishing second to Perez who clinched the fifth victory of his F1 career so far. Former Driver Damon Hill said that he had “every chance” to catch Perez despite him appearing upset about finishing second.

The 2022 Australian Grand Prix will not be a good recent memory for him either as last year he was forced to retire after 38 laps due to a fuel leak. Verstappen is a heavy favourite at 4/11 to rewrite some wrongs.

SERGIO PEREZ 9/2

The man who won his first race of the season at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix Sergio Perez will be hoping lightning can strike twice in a row as he looks to pile the pressure on his teammate Max Verstappen in the Driver’s Championship.

What’s emerging already is a Red Bull soap opera where both drivers look to win the title, Team Principal Christian Horner has refused to make Verstappen the number one driver as he suggests he is going to give both men a fair chance of winning the Drivers’ Championship.

In last year’s edition of the race, Perez came second to race winner Charles Leclerc and will be hoping he can go one better this weekend and is currently 9/2 to do so.

Fernando Alonso 17/2

The oldest F1 Driver on the grind at 41 years of age. The 2005 and 2006 Drivers Championship winner is still competing at the very top of the F1 Table with a third place in the Bahrain Grand Prix and Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in his opening two races of the season.

The Aston Martin Driver has been criticised in the last week when former team owner Eddie Jordan says Fernando Alonso only has himself to blame for failing to win more World Championships throughout his Formula 1 career. Harsh words or fair comment? I don’t know but I do know he is 17/2 to win at the weekend!

Charles Leclerc 18/1

The fourth favourite for the Australian GP is Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc who has had an interesting start to the season. In the Bahrain Grand Prix, he did not finish after being forced to retire from the race on lap 40 with a technical problem on his car while running in the top three.

His luck would improve slightly at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix where he finished seventh but will be looking to build on that and finish on the podium in Australia. Charles will have fond memories of this competition also having won the 2022 Australian Grand Prix beating Sergio Perez in second.

Can lightning strike twice and Leclerc have a big 18/1 win? Time will tell.

Lewis Hamilton 25/1

While not the force he once was on the F1 Track he is still a more than capable driver and on his day he will not be far from a podium finish. Hamilton has placed fifth in both the Bahrain Grand Prix and Saudi Arabian Grand Prix so far in the 2022 season.

In the last week, Hamilton has admitted he “sometimes feels like stopping” but he went on to quash any retirement plans for the near future.

In this race last year he finished fourth and will be expected to be thereabouts again and so can be gotten at 25/1 to win at the weekend.
