Burnley v Man City Prediction, Preview & Odds – Premier League Opener

We have a Burnley v Man City prediction and betting odds for you as we preview the Premier League’s opening game of the 2023/24 campaign.

The opening Premier League match of the season has put up an interesting clash between the reigning and defending 22/23 Premier League Champions against last season’s Championship Champions Burnley FC.

By extension, it will pit the treble-winning Pep Guardiola against his former player Vincent Kompany who has been widely touted in some footballing circles as the natural successor to Guardiola whenever his term at the Manchester club comes to an end.

Preview – Burnley v ManCity

Burnley’s Form

Vincent Kompany is entering his second season as Burnley’s manager, having been appointed by the club before the 2022 Championship season after Sean Dyche was sacked after a decade in charge.

Kompany proved his credentials at the first-time of asking by winning the EFL Championship in his first season. Burnley won the Championship title with ten points to spare over Sheffield United in second place.

The Premier League should prove to be a much stiffer test though and Manchester City in their opening league game of the season certainly will. However, such is the esteem that people hold Kompany in, alongside his squad, Burnley are not expected to be relegated this season with them currently only 11/4 fifth favourites to be relegated.

Burnley had a busy pre-season but were largely in decent form with five wins, two defeats and one draw. The newly promoted outfit scored thirteen goals and conceded six in those outings. While a large number of their victories were against lower-league opposition, they had an impressive 2-0 victory against 23/24 Champions League Quarter-Finalists Benfica at the end of July which proves the strength of this Burnley squad.

I’ve been impressed with their off-season recruitment too, with Irishmen Dara O’Shea and Michael Obafemi (now permanent) joining Josh Cullen at the club. Elsewhere the signings of James Trafford, Nathan Redmond and Jordin Beyer could all prove to be shrewd acquisitions amongst others this season.

I’m very excited about this new-look Burnley side, although I’m unsure whether their possession-based and attacking football will be suited to facing Manchester City.

Manchester City’s Form

City ended last season in exceptional form and look like a force to be reckoned with for some time to come with no signs of them letting up! They go into this season as the Premier League favourites once again.

Guardiola’s side stormed past Arsenal in the Premier League title race thanks to an almost perfect run in. They also made light work of Manchester United in the FA Cup before completing the historic treble by winning the Champions League Final against Inter Milan.

They looked completely unstoppable in the latter stages of 2022-23 and will be looking to set down their crusade on football again on Sunday.

In pre-season action they had two wins against Yokohama F Marinos 3-5 and Bayern Munch 1-2 before losing to Atletico Madrid 1-2. Despite that loss there is little cause for concern from Guardiola and co.

Their squad is as strong as ever and despite the loss of Gundogan on a free transfer to Barcelona, he was aptly replaced with their signing of Kovačić from Chelsea with the likes of De Bruyne, Haaland and co remaining they will obviously be the team to beat again.

In the season-opener last weekend they drew with Arsenal 1-1 despite taking a 77th-minute lead through Cole Palmer. A 90+11th minute goal from Leandro Trossard gave Arsenal the equaliser and City lost 4-1 on penalties. Although I wouldn’t let that deter you from them from this match, Guardiola will have prioritised this one.
