We have a Champions League Round of 16 preview for you along with predictions and betting odds as the competition enters the last 16 stage.

We are now entering the knockout stages of the Champions League after a long absence because of an unusual winter World Cup. The Champions League round of 16 draw has brought us some cracking fixtures this year which are likely to have us fans on the edge of our seats.

The standout tie is a rematch of last year’s final and we have a preview and prediction for that game and all the rest below!

RB Leipzig v Manchester City

RB Leipzig Champions League Form

RB Leipzig won four of their six group games to qualify for the round of 16 via a second place finish. The Germans got off to a poor start in the group stages with two losses to start their campaign. They have since recovered and are now on a four game winning streak including a 3-2 win against last year’s champions Real Madrid.

Manchester City Champions League Form

Man City are unbeaten in this competition so far this year. Of their six group games they won four and drew two. This was good enough for a comfortable first place finish, five points ahead of second placed Borussia Dortmund.

It was Copenhagen and Dortmund that held City to a draw with both games being goalless affairs.

The betting odds

Man City are massive favourites to advance to the quarter-finals in this tie at odds of 1/10. RB Leipzig, at odds of 11/2, shouldn’t be counted out as they have already proven that they can compete with the likes of Real Madrid so 11/2 here looks a tad big for the quality of this side.

Club Brugge v Benfica

Club Brugge Champions League Form

Club Brugge started their Champions League campaign off very strong but have since struggled. The Belgians won their first three games but in their three games since they are without a win with two draws and an embarrassing 4-0 loss to Porto. These recent struggles do not bode well for this side as we enter the business end of this Champions League.

Benfica Champions League Form

Benfica have been so impressive in the Champions League this year. The Portuguese giants went into a group with both PSG and Juventus and came out on top and without a loss to their name. From their six group games Benfica won four and drew two. Those two draws came against Paris. This team could well be a dark horse to look out for as this competition progresses.

The betting odds

Benfica are the big favourites to advance from this tie and based on their performances to date it is hard to argue with their odds of 2/7 to advance to the quarter-finals. Club Brugge have been installed as 13/5 underdogs to make it to the next round and if they are to pull off the upset they will have to improve on recent performances in this Champions League.

Liverpool v Real Madrid

Liverpool may be dealing with massive struggles in the Premier League but their Champions League form is a completely different story. The Merseyside club were embarrassed on the opening match day against Napoli 4-1 but since then they have reeled off five straight wins.

This was still not enough however to top the group as Napoli were able to finish ahead of them on goal difference.

Real Madrid Champions League Form

Real Madrid topped their group with four wins, one draw and one loss. The Spanish giants were beaten by RB Leipzig and held to a draw by Shakhtar Donetsk in what wasn’t an overly impressive qualifying campaign.

Nevertheless, Real Madrid are the reigning Champions League champions and they are an even better side than the one that lifted the trophy last year.

The betting odds

Despite Liverpool’s poor run of form in domestic competitions they are favoured here to get the better of Madrid and qualify for the quarter-finals at odds of 8/11. Real Madrid are 21/20 to advance to the next round and I think those odds offer punters great value. Madrid are a more complete side than they were last year and Liverpool have gone in the other direction.

AC Milan v Tottenham

AC Milan Champions League Form

Milan have qualified for this stage of the competition thanks to a second place finish in their group. The Italians finished behind Chelsea with three wins, one draw and two losses (both at the hands of Chelsea).

AC Milan finished the group stages strong with back-to-back 4-0 wins against Dinamo Zagreb and Salzburg. However, their two losses to Chelsea will cast doubts about how far this team can go in this Champions League.

Tottenham Champions League Form

Tottenham finished top of group D in what was one of the weaker groups in this Champions League. Spurs weren’t overly impressive in their group campaign with three wins, two draws and one loss.

They did just enough to top the group and this tie against AC Milan should be a tough test for them.

The betting odds

The odds makers have found it very hard to separate these two teams in the betting. Tottenham are the very slight favourites at the moment at odds of 5/6 to advance to the last eight. AC Milan meanwhile have been installed at 10/11 to reach the next round.

These odds reflect the fact that there is very little to separate these two sides. I lean towards AC Milan here as I think they have a better home advantage than Tottenham with the electric atmosphere at the San Siro on Champions League nights.

Eintracht Frankfurt v Napoli

Frankfurt came second in their group behind Tottenham to get to this stage of the Champions League. In their six games they won three, drew one and lost two.

They started their campaign with a disappointing 3-0 loss to Sporting Lisbon but were able to bounce back from that opening defeat. The German side managed to take four points out of a possible six against Tottenham.

Napoli Champions League Form

Napoli were one of the most impressive teams in the Champions League group stages. They set a marker in their first game with a 4-1 home win against Liverpool.

Their only loss in their group came on the final match day against that same opposition when they were beaten 2-0 at Anfield. Despite the loss, the Italians had done enough to top their group thanks to a superior goal difference to Liverpool.

The betting odds

The favourites to advance to the next round from this tie are Napoli at odds of 4/9. Frankfurt find themselves at 17/10 to get to the quarter-finals. Napoli have the more talented players and they are also in better form so it’s hard to pick against them qualifying here.

Borussia Dortmund v Chelsea

Dortmund didn’t set the world on fire with their group stage performances in this competition. They gained nine points from their six games which was good enough to finish in second place behind Man City.

Group stage games against other big teams can be a good indicator for a team’s potential in the Champions League and Dortmund fared well against Man City. They only lost by a solitary goal in the away leg and managed to hold City to a draw at home.

Chelsea Champions League Form

Chelsea bounced back from an opening round defeat to Dinamo Zagreb to top their group. The London side are now unbeaten in their last five Champions League games.

Graham Potter’s side were able to beat second placed AC Milan twice in impressive fashion which is a good sign for this team as they enter the knockout stages of this Champions League.

The betting odds

The favourites to advance out of these two teams is Chelsea at odds of 11/20. Dortmund can be had at 11/8 in the betting and those odds don’t look bad for what is a very good Dortmund team with a history of performing well in Europe.

Inter Milan v Porto

Inter Milan Champions League Form

Inter qualified for this game thanks to finishing second in Group C to Bayern Munich. Over the course of six games Inter Milan won three games, drew one and lost two.

Apart from their games against Bayern, both of which ended in 2-0 defeats, this Inter side were impressive and can have realistic hopes of going far in this Champions League.

Porto Champions League Form

After a tough start to this Champions League where Porto suffered two losses they came back to win their final four group fixtures. Those four wins were good enough to see this team top the group ahead of Club Brugge.

The Portuguese team’s form can’t be discounted here. They finished their last four group games with a goal difference of +10.

The betting odds

Inter Milan are favourites to progress at 4/7. Porto are listed at 13/10 to get the better of the Italians over two games. I quite fancy Porto to pull off the upset In this round of 16 tie given their strong run of form and an Inter Milan team which has been good but not great to this point of the competition.

PSG v Bayern Munich

Paris were unable to top Group H despite a starting XI that includes Messi, Mbappe and Neymar. Benfica were the team that topped them in the group stages with both games between these two teams ending in 1-1 draws.

Even though PSG didn’t top their group table, they still went through the six games unbeaten. This team hasn’t lived up to the hype that surrounded them since Messi joined but it is still hard to pick against them given their embarrassment of riches up front.

Bayern Munich Champions League Form

Bayern have been the best team in this Champions League to date. They were the only team to win all six of their group games. This of course saw them top their group ahead of Inter Milan.

Not only did Bayern win all their games, they won every game by two or more goals which is an incredible statistic when you consider they had one of the tougher groups in the competition.

The betting odds

Bayern Munich have been installed as the 7/10 favourites in this mouth-watering round of 16 tie while PSG are the underdogs at odds of 11/10.

It’s hard to bet against a side like PSG with all the attacking talent that they have but Bayern are an incredibly well rounded team who play well as a unit. I’m tipping the Germans to squeak by here by the skin of their teeth.
