Arkle Chase Preview – Chelenham 2023

El Fabiolo – Arkle Chase Joint Favourite 6/4

The W-P Mullins 6-year-old gelding comes into the race in good form having won each of its last three races dating back to the 29th of April in Punchestown when he won over a 2-mile trip. That win came against a nine-horse-field and El Fabiolo had four lengths to spare in the end.

Following that victory the gelding had a 236 day break before returning with a dominant nineteen length win as part of a five-horse-field over a 2-mile trip on December 21st. Last time out this 6-year-old won over a 2-mile 1 furlong trip at Leopardstown by a comfortable ten lengths against an eight horse field.

El Fabiolo is currently a 6/4 chance to continue its winning streak and make it four wins in four.

Jonbon – Arkle Chase Joint Favourite 6/4

The seven-year-old gelding trained by Nicky Henderson enters the Arkle Chase on-form. Its most recent outing saw him come first in a two-horse field over the 2-mile trip against Calico who he beat by 5.5 lengths in Warwick on the 11th of February.

That victory made it four wins on-the-spin with a cumulative margin-of-victory of 20.75 lengths. Interestingly, the first victory in that run of form was started on the 8th of April when it beat fellow co-favourite for this race El Fabiolo by a neck in Aintree over a 2-mile ½ furlong trip.

Can he repeat the trick at Cheltenham in the Arkle Chase and get one over on El Fabiolo again? Jonbon’s currently a 6/4 shot to do just that.

Dysart Dynamo – Arkle Chase Third Favourite 4/1

Dysart Dynamo, the seven-year-old W-P Mullins trained gelding, boasts an impressive record of five wins from eight races. However, in recent times it could be argued that the horse’s record has been a mixed bag.

Last time out on February 4th the horse raced over the 2-mile 1 furlong trip in Leopardstown coming fourth in an eight-horse-field. Dysart Dynamo finished 10.5 lengths behind Arkle Chase rival El Fabiolo that day. However, on the same track and distance on the 28th of December he recorded a dominant 28-length victory as part of a four-horse-field.

W-P Mullins and Dysart Dynamo are 4/1 to claim Arkle Chase glory this year.

Saint Roi –  8/1

The eight-year-old gelding is another on the W-P Mullins ticket and is owned by JP McManus, a man who is no stranger to success at Cheltenham. On the 4th of February he ran against El Fabiolo, Banbridge and Dysert Dynamo but unfortunately did not finish the race as jockey Mark Walsh was unseated at the fifth.

It’s last line of winning-form was over the 2-mile 1 furlong trip at Leopardstown on St. Stephen’s Day. That day he beat a five-horse-field by 2.25 lengths. The Mullins team are 8/1 to return Saint Roi to winning form again at the Arkle Chase.

Banbridge – 9/1

The seven-year-old gelding, trained by Joseph Patrick O’Brien, was second to El Fabiolo in his most recent appearance during the 4th of February meeting in Leopardstown. Prior to that race at Leopardstown we saw Banbridge come third in a ten-horse-field at Fairyhouse over a 2-mile 4 furlong trip where he finished 18.5 lengths behind winner Mighty Potter.

You have to go back to the 12th of November for the horse’s last victory but that was in a race that is very strongly tied to the Arkle Chase. That race that he won was the Arkle Challenge Trophy Trial Novices’ Chase on the old Cheltenham course when he beat a six-horse-field by six lengths. Banbridge is a 9/1 chance to return to winning form at Prestbury Park for the O’Brien team.
