Stayers Hurdle Preview

Blazing Khal – Stayers Hurdle Favourite 3/1

The Charles Byrnes trained seven-year-old Blazing Khal has been blazing a trail of dominance on track for some time now having won his last fives races dating back to a victory in Limerick on the 3rd of December 2020.

Blazing Khal’s most recent success came on the 12th of February in Navan over the 2-mile 5 furlong trip. That day he beat an eight-horse-field by 3 lengths when making his return after a 428-day break from the track.

Can Blazing Khal continue maintain winning form? Blazing Khal is 3/1 to do just that!

Teahupoo – Stayers Hurdle Second Favourite 7/2

The second favourite for the Stayers Hurdle is the Gordan Elliott trained Teahupoo. This six-year-old returned to the racetrack after a 56 day break on the 26th of January in Gowran Park where he cruised to victory over the 3-mile ½ furlong trip by fifteen lengths against a six-horse-field.

That made it two wins on-the-spin for the horse. The Elliott team will be looking for a more competitive outing than at last year’s festival when Teahupoo came ninth out of a ten-horse-field in the Champion Hurdle Challenge Trophy. He finished an enormous 33 lengths a-back from winner Honeysuckle on that occasion.

Teahupoo is 7/2 to make amends for last year’s performance by winning this year’s Stayers Hurdle

Home By The Lee – 5/1

Trained by Joseph O’Brien, and likely to be ridden by J.J. Slevin, this eight-year-old comes into the Stayers’ Hurdle on the back of a victory in Leopardstown on the 28th of December when he beat an 11-runner field by 11 lengths over a 3-mile trip.

At last year’s festival this O’Brien horse competed in the Stayers Hurdle and finished sixth out of a ten-horse-field on that occasion. He came 7.5 lengths back of winner Flooring Porter who also returns to the field for the 2023 Stayers Hurdle.

Home By The Lee is 5/1 to win the 2023 Stayers Hurdle.

Flooring Porter – 5/1

The 2022 Winner of the Stayers Hurdle trained by Gavin Cromwell is likely to be ridden out by Danny Mullins again at this festival. However, since that victory Flooring Porter is without a win with runs in three races.

The most notable of those appearances was when he was beaten by Home By The Lee by twelve lengths in Navan back in November. Home By The Lee once again raced against Flooring Porter on the 28th of December in Leopardstown and again Home By The Lee won, this time by 3.75 lengths.

Flooring Porter is currently a 5/1 chance to reclaim the Stayers Hurdle and return to form.
