Denmark v Northern Ireland Odds - Euro 2024 Qualifier

The Form – Denmark vs Northern Ireland

Denmark’s Form

Denmark have three defeats, one win and one draw in their last five matches. Their sole victory came 3-1 against Finland back in March.

The Danes most recent match was a disappointing 3-2 defeat against Kazakhstan (currently the 112th ranked team in the world) last March. Their other two defeats were a 1-0 loss against Australia and 2-1 against France at the World Cup which led to them not qualifying out of their group.

Also in the 2022 World Cup they were held to a 0-0 draw against Tunisia which meant they came last in their group with only one goal.

Kasper Hjulmand has overseen the Danes since 2020 when he guided the country to a Euro 2020 semi-finals. It was England who eventually knocked them out of that tournament but not before the Danes took the lead in that semi-fina and forced the hosts to injury time before a controversial Harry Kane penalty in extra time eliminated them. They will be looking to qualify for the tournament which they won back at the 1992 European Championship in what was perhaps the greatest upset in the tournament’s history.

Northern Ireland’s Form

Northern Ireland have two defeats, two wins and one draw in their last five matches. Their two victories came 0-2 against San Marino back in March along with a 2-1 win against Kosovo back in September.

Their most recent defeat came in a narrow 0-1 loss against Finland back in March. Before that they were defeated 3-1 by Greece back in September. The lone draw from their last five outings came against Cyprus with the final score reading 2-2.

Michael O’Neill is back in charge of Northern Ireland after being the man in charge from 2011-2020 which was inarguably the country’s most competitive spell in modern-day International history. That period included their sole and only Euro Championship appearance in 2016 where O’Neill coached the team to a Round of 16 appearance.

Denmark vs Northern Ireland Preview

Denmark’s Tactics

Denmark are a tactically flexible side that can be seen in anything from a 3-4-2-1, 3-5-2 and 4-3-3. I’d expect the latter to be the formation of choice given their home status and supposed superior quality than Northern Ireland.

Schmeichel should start in goal as he nears closer to 100 caps along with a back four that could include Bah, Kjaer, Christensen and Mæhle.

With Norgaard out through injury I suspect that Höjbjerg could be employed deeper in midfield as the combative number 8 ranks in the 80th percentile for interceptions, 92nd for pass completion and 87th for clearances. In other words he has the tools to play the defensive midfield role. He will likely be partnered by Jensen and Billing as the two number 8s.

Damsgaard looks nailed for the LW spot with either Braithwaite or Wind on the RW (if I am guessing, the former). However, the man of the moment is Højlund (20) up-front who is one of the up-and-coming strikers in world football with 5 goals in 4 senior games for his country. He ranks in the 84th percentile for Non-Penalty XG, 83rd percentile for Successful Takes Ons and on average has 11 Progressive Passes Received per 90 which is in the 99th percentile.

Northern Ireland’s Tactics

Northern Ireland will set themselves up in a 3-5-2 with Peacock-Farrell in the net. Captain Johnny Evans returns to the heart of the defence alongside likely to be Brown and Ballard with Cathcart coming out of the side despite captaining them in their previous two games.

However, Denmark are likely to dominate possession and so you are more likely to see them in a 5-3-2 off the ball with Bradley and Lewis who are natural full-backs operating in the wing-back role. McNair and Charles in midfield are both natural defenders which will give them extra protection again alongside either Thompson or Saville.

Their front-two will likely be Conor Washington who despite a poor season still scored five Championships goals and averages a goal every six games for Northern Ireland. On the other hand, the Bolton striker scored sixteen goals and got one assist in League One this season.

Denmark vs Northern Ireland Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: Denmark 3-1 Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland have been in decent form and will fancy their chances against a Danish side who have been out-of-sorts in recent games and could be there for the taking.

That being said I think home advantage and the extra Danish quality will shine through and they should win comfortably.

Best Bet: Denmark Win & BTTS @ 3/1
