The Form – Malta vs England

Malta’s Form

Malta have three defeats, one win and one draw in their last five matches, their sole victory came 0-1 away to Luxembourg in a friendly last week.

That victory ended a three-match losing streak where they lost their first Euro 2024 qualifiers back in March 2-1 against Macedonia and 0-2 against Italy back in March, their other defeat came 0-1 against Ireland back in a November friendly.

Malta have never reached an international tournament and are coached by Italian Michele Marcolini who is in the job since being appointed last December. Malta are currently ranked 167th and while are complete outsiders, go into this fixture without any pressure.

England’s Form

For all their critics and cynics has not been this consistent on the international stage in some time, perhaps ever. Following a fourth-place finish at the 2018 World Cup that was followed by Euro 2020 Runners-Up finish and most recently a Quarter-Final appearance at the 2022 World Cup.

England enter their third qualifier in Group C with a 100% record after wins over Italy and Ukraine, in March. In fact, they have won four out of their last five matches with their other two victories coming 3-0 against Senegal and Wales at the World Cup. Their only defeat came 1-2 against France in the Quarter-Final.

Malta vs England Preview

Malta Tactics

Despite being relative minnows in the footballing fraternity, Malta are a tactically solid side managed by Michele Marcolini. In this game they are likely to sit back in a 5-3-2 low block formation to get bodies behind the ball and try to give up as little space as possible to the English.

They will be comfortable with crosses being put in with Apap, Nwoko and Mbong all averaging two aerials won per match. On the other hand, in possession, their two full-backs Mbong and Corbalan are both natural wingers so can provide plenty of pace on the counterattack.

Satariano is likely to be their main threat up-front. He has two goals and six assists in twenty-six games this season in the Maltese League. Satariano could be partnered up-front with Jodi Jones who made five League One appearances this season and has agreed to join Notts County in League 2 on a Free Transfer.

England Tactics

You know what you’re going to get with a Gareth Southgate side and that is a safe selection no matter who the opposition. Southgate prefers to stick to his trusted favourites rather than experiment with style of play and selection. Even with players likely to be missing I think this will make him even safer in his selection.

Pickford is the undisputed number one for England and will return in net after a helping Everton avoid the drop in a tightly fought relegation battle. I expect Trippier to come in for Walker who could be rested due to his Champions League exploits. However I expect the defence to stay the same besides that change with the younger John Stones starting alongside Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw.

With Bellingham out of the fixture due to injury and Jack Grealish will likely miss out as he continues to nurse his post Champions League hangover. Expect Kalvin Philips to come in and partner Henderson and Rice in midfield.

The front three will likely be Saka, Kane and Foden. The latter of which will probably come in due to playing less minutes in the Champions League Final.

Malta vs England Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: Malta 0-3 England

This should be too easy for England despite there being a few players likely to be missing due to injury and rotation. Malta will look to keep it tight though and may not concede as many goals as some would expect.
