Group F Preview – Euro 2024 Qualifiers

Belgium

The Belgians come into this group as the heavy favourites for automatic qualification but have they entered a period of transition? Since their the 2014 World Cup quarter-final appearance this side has been consistently at the top of the international table which includes Euro quarter-final appearances in 2016 and 2020.

The squad of players over that period was seen by many as their “golden generation” with plenty now arguing they have even underachieved for all the talent that they had. At the 2022 World Cup it seems liked this generation’s time came to an end following their group stage elimination.

Italian-German coach Domenico Tedesco, who is only 37, has been tasked with navigating this side’s progression to Euro 2024. Qualification from this group should not be an issue with talents like Lukaku and De Bruyne forming the backbone of a strong albeit ageing core for this side.

Belgium are 14/1 to win the Euros in 2024 in what is likely the last chance (assuming that chance hasn’t passed already) for this golden generation to lift a major tournament trophy.

Austria

Former Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick was appointed manager of Austria on the 29th of April 2022 on a two-year deal with the option of a further two should they qualify for Euro 2024. One of his primary goals as manager was also to bring back the fans through entertaining football and showing team spirit.

Rangnick won his first game in charge of Austria when they beat Croatia 3-0 but that would be their only win of the season. Following a 3-1 defeat to Croatia in the reverse fixture on 25 September, they got relegated to League B in the Nations League.

It should be noted that the high intensity gegenpressing may have taken a period of transition for the Austrian players and more recent signs have been good with a 1-0 win over Andorra and 2-0 win vs Italy back in November.

With stars like Real Madrid’s David Alaba (30), Man United’s Sabitzer (29) and RB Salzburg’s Junior Adamu (21) there is plenty of quality present in this Austrian side as they look to qualify for only their third European Championship ever.

Austria haven’t been discounted by our odds makers who put this team at 40/1 to go all the way at Euro 2024.

Sweden

The Swedes have been managed by Janne Andersson since 2016 who boasts a 51.81% win-rate as manager with 43 wins, 14 draws and 26 losses from his 83 matches in charge. The highlight of his time in charge has been a quarter-final appearance at the 2018 World Cup.

Sweden will be hoping to qualify for their seventh consecutive European Championships and they come into this qualification campaign in great form with four wins in a row having dispatched Mexico, Algeria, Finland and Iceland.

In those last four games they scored eight goals and only conceded two. There’s a lot to like about this Swedish Squad especially going forward with the likes of Elanga, Isak, Kulusevski and even a certain 41 one-year-old veteran Zlatan Ibrahimović amongst the attacking options.

Sweden could make for an interesting bet to win Euro 2024 at long odds of 50/1.

Azerbaijan

Managed by Italian Gianni De Biasi since 2020, this side are currently ranked 121st in the world but are nonetheless in excellent form winning their last five matches. The opposition that they beat in those games include Belarus, Slovakia, Kazakhstan, Moldova and North Macedonia.

Azerbaijan scored twelves goals and only conceded three in those five victories. This was good enough for them to claim second place in their Nations League C group.

This squad is almost exclusively made up of home-based players and De Biasi has been able to build a cohesive collective unit of well drilled players who know each other well due to many of them being at a minimum weekly opponents and very often teammates.

Qualification from this group may be a push too far for this squad but they should be competitive throughout and give the top three teams plenty of trouble.

Estonia

The Estonians enter group F with Thomas Häberli at the helm, a man who took the role back in 2021 following experience at club level with the likes of FC Basel. Estonia have had some moderate success in recent times having come third-place in the 2022 Baltic Cup back in November when they beat Lithuania 2-0 in the play-off final.

In 2023 Estonia have played twice, drawing 1-1 vs Iceland and beating Finland 1-0. Their squad has an interesting profile with players from the likes of young Arsenal keeper Karl Hein (20) and Tottenham defender Maksim Paskotši (20) who have both yet to make a senior appearance for their clubs.

This squad also includes a player playing his domestic football in Ireland in the form of Sligo Rovers’ Bogdan Vaštšuk (23). While they might struggle to qualify from this group there are some areas of interest in this squad to watch for among fans of English and Irish Football.
