The Dutch outfit had an excellent 22/23 season where they won the Eredivisie and reached the semi-final of the KNVB Cup and the Quarter-Final of the Europa League. Such was their performance last year that Manager Arne Slot was coveted by Tottenham before he turned down Daniel Levy’s approach.

Slot was backed well during the summer transfer window with a huge amount of changes in players. At all levels of the club, there were 25 incomings and 26 departures.

Feyenoord’s major departures were CM Orkun Kökcü who went to Benfica for €25m and CF Danilo who went to Rangers for €6.3m. It should be noted that several players were signed from Premier League academies on either full or loan deals. The signing off Calvin Stengs from Nice for just €6m could be the pick of the business though.

Feyenoord have started their league title defence solidly as they are currently unbeaten with 3 wins and 2 draws. Their most recent outing came against Heerenveen who they beat on 6-1 to put them in high spirits heading into this Champions League tie.

Celtic’s Form

Last season Celtic had a brilliant domestic campaign which saw them complete the treble under former Manager Ange Postecoglou who has since gone on to pastures new with Tottenham.

Unfortunately from a Celtic point of view, they couldn’t translate that domestic success to the Champions League. They were eliminated in the group stage where they finished bottom with just two points from six games.

Brendan Rodgers is back at the helm and I dare say that he and many fans would swap a domestic cup victory to get out of the Champions League groups this season.

This summer the Hoops brought in a total of ten players including Nat Philips, on loan from Liverpool so it will be interesting to see how this side gels together. In terms of departures, the loss of Jota to Al-Ittihad will prove very difficult to replace.

Celtic have had an almost flawless start to their league title defence with four wins and one draw from their five league matches. That puts them top of the table, two points clear of their nearest challengers.
