Galway are sixteen points clear at the top of the table following their draw against second-placed Waterford two weeks ago and it seems a matter of “when” not “if” for their First-Division glory. Galway also won their rescheduled tie with UCD on Monday 1-5 to book themselves an FAI Cup Quarter-Final place where the double remains very much on.

Cobh are in third place, a position they have occupied for most of the season. However, following three draws in a row, one win and one defeat in their last five that spot is in danger from Athlone who are only two points back in fourth. Both sides look likely to make a playoff but the battle for third could prove key if either side wants to avoid Waterford.

Bray v Waterford

After a brighter spell earlier in the season after the trouble of last season, there seem to be problems on and off the field at the club again. This preview deals with on-the-field though, and in that they have just two points in their last five league games meaning they are currently in sixth-place, outside the playoff spots with Longford, Treaty and Harps all breathing quietly behind them.

Waterford in a sense are in a very difficult place with ten league games remaining. Waterford are sixteen points behind Galway (albeit with one less game played) and look highly unlikely to catch them. However, they remain twelve points ahead of Cobh Ramblers in third and so are very likely to be in the playoffs come the end of the season. These next few games will be about focusing them on that journey and putting the 3-0 FAI Cup defeat against Cork City behind them for the reason of the season.

Treaty v Kerry

Treaty had arguably the most important win of their season two-week-ago 0-1 against Finn Harps which ended their three-game losing streak. Treaty currently occupies eighth place but have a game in hand (albeit against Waterford) over the rest of the league. If they were to win this game and shock Waterford they would find themselves well in playoff contention again.

Kerry come on leaps and bounds this season which will stand them on good course for next season where they should be an even stronger prospect. In their last five games, they have lost narrowly to Finn Harps, Wexford and Drogheda in the Cup, drawn with Cobh Ramblers and were only comprehensively beaten by Waterford 3-0. Kennedy Amechi looks like a future star for them too and I’m hoping to see him get increased game-time following his brace against Wexford.

Athlone v Wexford

Athlone are in solid form, two wins, two draws and one defeat in their last five put them in fourth place and just two points behind Cobh and five points ahead of their opponents Wexford in fifth place. Victory here would all but secure their playoff credentials, special mention has to go to Frantz Pierrot for his performances this season where he has 18 goals and 5 assists in 23 league so far.

It’s been a more than decent season for Wexford so far, three wins, one draw and a defeat in their last five league games mean they occupy fifth place. Elsewhere,  following their favourable FAI Cup draws and victories against Avondale and St Patrick’s CY, they now find themselves in a Quarter-Final against Cork City.

Finn Harps v Longford Town

Finn Harps have had a Jekyll and Hyde season under Dave Rogers, following their relegation from the Premier Division last season it was always going to be a process. In the league, they had two wins on the spin, but now have earned just a sole point in their last three games which means they are second from bottom albeit just three points off sixth. Elsewhere, favourable draws and victories against Kilbarrack Utd and Skerries Town mean they have an FAI Cup Quarter-Final against St Patrick’s Athletic (at home) to look forward to too!

Longford have nine points from their last five games and are not out of playoff contention following a poor start to the season. I’ve said it before but it’s true, Stephen Henderson deserves a lot of credit for the job he is doing particularly with the recruitment of Beineon O’Brien-Whitmarsh on a Free Transfer, he has six goals and two assists in eleven games since signing. A win here could have them leapfrog an out-of-sorts Bray.
