League Of Ireland Premier Division Table

Here’s how the SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division table looks after Round Twenty-One!

Derry City v Cork City

When? 7.45 pm, Friday, 23rd June

Where? The Brandywell, Derry

How To Watch? LOITV.ie

Betting Odds

Derry City are 1/3, Cork City can be gotten at 8/1 while the draw is 7/2.

Preview

Derry City are coming into this game in poor form despite their strong start to the season. They have two defeats, two draws and just one victory in their last five league outings which has resulted in them falling six points behind title rivals Shamrock Rovers who currently hold first place in the Premier Division.

Before the break though they could consider themselves unlucky not to beat Bohemians after hitting 14 shots to Bohs 9 and being denied a stone wall penalty. Derry will be out for a victory here to start the second half of their season by piling the pressure on Shamrock Rovers in advance of Europe.

Cork City before the break had their four-match winning run ended by Dundalk 1-2 in Turners Cross which was the team that had also beaten them before their winning run in controversial fashion with several suspect referee calls.

Despite Dundalk winning the last two, there is very little between both of those sides and Cork City are not the lost hopes they so seemed earlier in the season. Victory for Cork City could bring them up to seventh and they could start to look up the table even further.

Prediction

Derry City 1-1 Cork City

Bohemians v Shamrock Rovers

When? 7.45 pm, Friday, 23rd June

Where? Dalymount Park, Dublin

How To Watch? RTÉ 2

Betting Odds

Bohemians are 9/4, Shamrock Rovers are 6/5 while the draw is 11/5.

Preview

Bohemians were flying at the start of the season with Declan Devine’s side surprisingly leading the way at the top of the table for much of the campaign so far.

Unfortunately from their point of view the form has dropped off in recent weeks with three draws, one loss and only one victory. This run has resulted in them falling to fourth in the table with Dundalk, Shelbourne and maybe even the relegation rivals breathing down their necks.

They will need a result here to not fall further on the table as their season could go from excellent to below par quickly.

Shamrock Rovers like the champions they have been these last three seasons have shown resilience after their bizarre defeats from relegation fodder Drogheda United and Cork City to win three matches on the spin before the international break. Thanks to this winning streak Rovers now have a six-point lead at the top of the table.

A victory in the Dublin Derby will be huge for them as they look to rack up as many points as possible before they potentially turn their focus towards the European Qualifying Rounds.

Prediction

Bohemians 1-3 Shamrock Rovers

Drogheda v Dundalk

When? 7.45 pm, Friday, 23rd June

Where? Weaver Park, Drogheda

How To Watch? LOITV.ie

Betting Odds

Drogheda are 8/5, Dundalk are 13/8 the draw is 23/10.

Preview

Drogheda will enter the Louth Derby in decent spirits following their three victories in their last five league games. Before the international break, they defeated St Patrick’s Athletic 2-1 to end their two-match losing run and put them in seventh position, only seven points behind Shelbourne in sixth place.

The Louth Derby is usually a tight and tense affair with Dundalk winning both games this season by a sole goal 3-2 last April and 0-1 in March. I feel Drogheda could be due a rub of the green here.

Dundalk have been very inconsistent this season with two wins, two defeats and one draw in their last five league games. However, they have won two of their last two albeit against relegation-threatened UCD and Cork City.

Things can turn fast though with one victory potentially bringing them as high as third in the table.

Prediction

Drogheda 1-0 Dundalk

St Patrick’s Athletic v Shelbourne

When? 7.45 pm, Friday, 23rd June

Where? Richmond Park, Dublin

How To Watch? LOITV.ie

Betting Odds

St Patrick’s Athletic are 4/5, Shelbourne are 7/2 while the draw is 12/5

Preview

St Patrick’s Athletic under new manager Jon Daly were in flying form before the international break winning four out of their five matches. However, they did lose their most recent match 2-1 against Drogheda which can only be described as a blip in their form.

I expect them to have that defeat well behind them by Friday and refocused for their league charge up the table as a win could bring them up to second.

Shelbourne are notoriously difficult to breakdown due to the coaching of Damien Duff. He has built them into the strongest defensive unit this season with only fourteen goals conceded, had they hit the back of the net any more than twenty times then they would be a lot higher on the table.

They have three draws, one win and one loss in their last five league games which is indicative of their struggles to turn draws into wins this season. They have 9 draws which is 3 more than the next closest team. A victory in this game could bring them up as high as fifth.

Prediction

St Patrick’s Athletic 1-1 Shelbourne

UCD v Sligo Rovers

When? 7.45 pm, Friday, 23rd June

Where? UCD Bowl, Dublin

How To Watch? LOITV.ie

Betting Odds

UCD are 13/2, Sligo can be gotten at 4/9 while the draw is 3/1.

Preview

UCD are bottom of the table with just the six points coming from their opening twenty matches. They are in terrible form right now having lost all of their last five matches. Their most recent outing came against Shamrock Rovers where they were demolished 4-0.

UCD are destined for automatic relegation and will need the greatest escape of all time to get out of this one when they are already fifteen points behind Cork City who are second from bottom.

On the bright side they should be boosted by returning players following the completion of exam season.

Sligo Rovers come into this match in poor form with three defeats, one draw and just one win in their last five. However, they will gain encouragement from their last result which was a 1-1 draw against Shelbourne where they had more shots on goal than Shels despite having only 31% of the possession.

Sligo will be earmarking this as a must-win game to keep the pressure on Drogheda and Cork City and a win could have them climb up to seventh.

Prediction

UCD 0-1 Sligo Rovers
