Irish Cup Coursing Favourites

Drive On Lesley – 3/1

The favourite for the 2024 Irish Cup is one of the fastest hounds we’ve seen up the field in recent years, the Chris O’Donovan-owned Drive On Lesley at 3/1. The son of Champion Stake winner Boylesportsmagic and Kilty Candy is also a multiple-time stake winner.

After missing out on Clonmel Coursing in 2023 after losing at Templetuohy in the final he went into the Irish Cup 2023 as one of the favourites @ 7/1, but the dog was shocked in the 2nd round after lifting his head seemingly on the way to victory.

Drive On Lesley after qualifying for the Dick Fitzgerald Irish Purse, proceeded to finally show the gears his talents suggested winning the event clocking 11.57, 11.37, 11.22 and 11.30 along the way. If on song, there will be few going quicker.

Cool Spirit – 5/1

The second favourite for the 2024 Irish Cup is Cool Spirit for Brendan Matthews. A dog bred in the purple being the son of 2014 Irish Cup winner Newinn Wonder and 2020 Oaks winner Foxhollow Queen.

Cool Spirit burst onto the scene last year when he qualified for Clonmel when he won the Newcastlewest trial stake. The dog was an impressive winner in the opening two rounds of the BoyleSports Derby in 2023 clocking 12.47 and 12.51 before being beaten by Tree Top Tyson in the third round.

The defending champion at this event last year, the dog ran up the first five courses clocking 11.50, 11.34, 11.37, a lightning 11.24 and an 11.39 to reach the final of the 2023 Irish Cup before going on to win the final beating Go Home Ourthat

The hound was most recently beaten in the Champion Stakes First Round against Ballymac Major but has shown himself to love this venue before and has huge claims for success again this year.

Ballymac Zena – 6/1

The 3rd favourite for the 2024 Irish Cup is leading lady Ballymac Zena for Liam Dowling and the daughter of the aforementioned Boylesportsmagic and Silent Wonder who won Coursing Bitch of the Year in 2019.

Zena first landed success at Castleisland coursing meeting back in 2022 where she booked her ticket for the National Meeting in Clonmel. At said meeting she showed all the class in the world winning her courses in 12.30, 12.45, 12.42, 12.48 and a thriller against Catunda Lauren before being declared the winner of the Horse & Jockey Oaks 2023 after kennelmate Ballymac Pippen was withdrawn from the final.

She continued her winning form this season with victory in the Kingdom Cup last December. At the National Meeting in the Champion Bitch she defeated Catunda Lauren in a rematch clocking 12.50 before being beaten by Barrack Alice in 12.93.

This lady has all the gears to challenge the boys! One to Watch

Select Bitch Stake Favourites

Zauberflute – 3/1

The joint-favourite for the 2024 Select Bitch Stake is Zauberflute, a bitch bred in the purple out of stud dog of the moment Kyle Mozart along with Laurina from the famous Belle Dam line.

Laurina has produced multiple trial stake winners including Gigantor who won the 2022 Derby Trial Stake in Edenderry before coming runner-up in the 2023 T.A Morris Stake National Meeting.

Zauberflute commenced her season running in Freshford Trial Stake, initially off-line in the final, she recomposed herself to land her ticket for Gavin Johns and Paudie Lyons last November. Her victory over Fiadhs Go Go cemented her status as one of the early Horse & Jockey Oaks favourites despite losing to Ballymac Callaway in the Semi-FInal at Abbeyfeale.

At the Oaks, she initially beat Magical Amelie in a 12.83 run and Boherlode Hope in 12.85 before being knocked out narrowly by Lasting Beauty.

However, she is the early market leader for this one with expectations of going close and a return to winning ways on the field.

Still Derramore

The other joint-favourite for the Select Bitch Stake is the daughter of Blame The Game who is from track breeding stock and Myleene a former Oaks Semi-Finalist and grand dam Needham Marie a Champion Bitch Stake winner all from the Tango Time breeding line. She is certainly bred to have gears for the Armagh/Down partnership of Harvey Lavelle and Pat White.

Still Derramore booked her place for Clonmel at her only outing at Loughrea Trial Stake but despite being the first reserve for Abbeyfeale she didn’t get called in which led to concerns over her sharpness coming into Clonmel.

She showed great gears in her opening-round victory against Migrant Lady before losing to the fast Marvelous Mover in 12.97. Despite that defeat, she is expected to go close come this weekend.

Macha Razor – 4/1

The 3rd favourite for the Select Bitch Stake is the daughter of Drive On Smokey (who was runner-up in the 2016 and 2017 Irish Cup) and Roxy Razor for the former Champion Stakes winning partnership of Patrick O’Connor and his mother Christina O’Connor.

Macha Razor booked her place for Clonmel at her only outing at Mitchelstown Trial Stake hosted at Clonmel & Kilsheen Coursing last November winning the Oaks Trial Stake and beating runner-up Ardmayle Queen.

The bitch went into the National Meeting as one of the favourites for the Horse & Jockey Oaks and won her opening round tussle against the highly-rated Ballymac Nano in 12.77.

She won her 2nd round in 12.78, and third round in 13.18 before being knocked out of the fourth round by Marvelous Mover in 12.92. The highly-rated bitch is tipped to go far at the weekend again.
