The Form – Newcastle v Arsenal

Newcastle’s Form

Newcastle come into this fixture in flying form having won their last three league matches since their surprise 3-0 defeat at Aston Villa. They have battered Tottenham 6-1, dispatched Everton 1-4 and last Sunday made light work of Southampton beating them 3-1 in a match where they created an XG of 4.3 to their opponents 0.8.

Newcastle look like certainties for the Top-4 with five matches to play. A win for the Magpies would see them on 68-points and potentially 12-points ahead of fifth-place Liverpool with the same number of matches played.

Arsenal’s Form

Arsenal has been excellent in the Premier League this season as they have gone from fifth place last season to shock title contenders. However, as the season draws to a close, they have stuttered and been unable to maintain their earlier form.

After leading the table for 85%+ of the season in their last five league matches they have three draws, one defeat (their hammering from Man City) and one victory which was a 3-1 comprehensive win over Chelsea on Tuesday Night.

After Arsenal’s victory over Chelsea, they’re back on top of the table (albeit with two games extra played) and will be looking to beat Newcastle on Sunday to keep any faint title hopes alive.

Newcastle v Arsenal Preview

Newcastle’s Attack

Newcastle have the joint fifth-best attack in the Division this season with 61 goals scored. 59% of their league goals 36/61 have been scored by three of their players Callum Wilson has 15 goals, Miguel Almirón has 11 goals and Alexander Isak has 10 goals.

They have further improved as the season draws to a climax averaging 1.84 goals this season. In their last three matches they have averaged a staggering 4.33 goals per game.

Arsenal’s Defence

Arsenal’s defence has conceded 39 goals this season which is an average of 1.14 goals per match. That figure is good enough for the joint third-best defence with Man United behind only Newcastle, who has only conceded 27 goals, and Man City who has only conceded 30 goals.

However, in their last five league matches they have been poor with 12 goals conceded for an average of 2.4 goals per match.

Arsenal’s Attack

Arsenal boast the second-best attack this season with 81 goals scoring an average of 2.38 goals per match across their 32 matches. That’s only three less goals than Man City albeit in two more matches than The Citizens.

Arsenal boasts arguably a more rounded attack than their title rivals with Martinelli having 15 goals and 5 assists, Saka’s 13 goals and 11 assists, and Ødegaard 14 goals and 8 assists all contributing to an excellent season for The Gunners.

Newcastle’s Defence

Newcastle has the best defence in the league this season only conceding 27 goals across their 33 matches which is an average of only 0.81 goals allow per match. They have conceded three fewer goals than the next best defence (Man City) having played an extra game also.

In their last five league matches they have only conceded 7 goals which is an average of 1.4 goals per match suggesting their defensive unit is slightly less solid in recent weeks perhaps because of their more open attacking style.

Newcastle v Arsenal Prediction

Prediction: Newcastle 1-1 Arsenal

Newcastle has been flying in recent weeks, while Arsenal seems to have recovered from their recent stutters with their confidence boosting victory over Chelsea on Tuesday.

Newcastle will want to push for third place and their season on a high while Arsenal will want to pile the pressure on Man City. Given the motivations for each team, I think there is more pressure on Arsenal in this one to keep the dream alive than Newcastle. I can see both sides cancelling each other out in a 1-1 draw.

Best Bet: Draw @ 5/2

Arsenal are the only team still in with a chance of stopping Man City from winning this year’s Premier League and we took a look at City’s chance of completing a historic treble this season.
