Boris Johnson has moved into a prominent position in the betting to be elected next leader of the Conservative Party
The pressure finally told on the Prime Minister on Thursday following a turbulent day which saw the departure of Home Secretary Suella Braverman and allegations of MPs being physically manhandled into lobbies to back the government in a vote on fracking.
Truss, who goes into the history books as the shortest serving British PM in history, revealed during her Downing Street statement that an election to choose a successor will be completed within the next week. But Truss’ predecessor Boris Johnson has made the biggest move of the other candidates having been slashed into 4/1 third favourite from 20/1 amid rumours he will run for a shock Downing Street return.
Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BoyleSports said: “Rishi Sunak and Penny Mordaunt were dominating the betting in the hour after Liz Truss announced her resignation, but a sudden surge in favour of Boris Johnson has put him hot on the heels of the favourites. We’ve had to bring him in to 4/1 after some significant stakes at 20/1, so a dramatic comeback would not be the best result for our books.”
