Robbie Power: Trainers Have To Step Up To The Bar Mullins Has Set

The dominance of Willie Mullins has become a hot topic in the world of jumps racing with the Irish trainer showing no signs of letting up.

There have been reports that the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) could look to limit the maximum number of runners a trainer can have in each race as a potential solution to the dominance of the big yards in the sport.

Our Brian O’Keeffe caught up with BoyleSports Horse Racing Ambassador Robbie Power for his take on Willie Mullins’ dominance and if restricting the number of runners per trainer is a good idea.

Brian from BoyleSports: So Robbie, the dominance of Willie Mullins has been a huge talking point recently, obviously he won eight out of eight Grade 1s over the weekend.

How do you think we’re going to balance out the playing field a little bit? Obviously, the BHA have floated the idea of having a maximum number for trainers in each race.

Other Trainers Must Rise To The Standard of Mullins

Robbie Power: Yeah, I don’t think that was a good idea. Obviously, they backtracked on that, so that wasn’t a good idea.

Look, there’s dominance in every sport, Dublin dominated with 5 All-Irelands, Liverpool dominated in the 80s, and Manchester United were dominant. All domination comes to an end and I don’t think there’s anything we can do that’s going to make racing better by restricting trainers or owners.

It’s up to all the other trainers to try and get the owners that Willie has and see if they can recruit the right horses to take Willie on.

Willie’s set the bar so high that everyone just has to try to step up to it, I don’t think owners’ or trainers’ numbers of runners in a race is the right way to look forward.

A lot of Willie’s horses are owned by different people and they all take each other on which makes for good racing as we saw at the weekend.
