THE FORM – Saracens v Sale Sharks

Sale Sharks Form

Sale are the underdogs in the Premiership Final having gone from sixth place last season to the final this year in what has been a great year of progression for the club. In the European Rugby Champions Cup, they finished 10/12 teams in Pool B which saw them qualify for the Challenge Cup after a record of one win and three defeats.

They would be then knocked out of the Challenge Cup losing to Cardiff 28-27. Their performances in the Premiership were much stronger winning fourteen and losing six of their twenty games to finish second in the league 5 points behind Saracens in top spot.

That league finish earned them a Semi-Final against Leicester Tigers which they won 21-13 to book their place in the final.

Saracens Form

The favourites in the Premiership Final will be looking to go one better than their runner-up finish in the same competition last season. In the European Rugby Champions Cup, they finished 4/12 teams in Pool A with a record of three wins and one defeat qualifying for the knockout stages of the competition.

In the Round of 16, they beat Ospreys 35-20 to qualify for the Quarter-Final where they would be knocked out by eventual champions La Rochelle 24-10. In the Premiership they won fifteen and lost five of their twenty games to top the league table and qualify for the Semi-Final against fourth-placed Northampton Saints who they defeated 38-15.

HOW THE TEAMS MATCH UP – Sale Sharks v Saracens

Sale Sharks Attack

During the Premiership league phase Sale Sharks had the second-best attack in the competition scoring 576 points in total across their 20 league games an average of 28.8 points per match doing so through 75 tries. In their Semi-Final victory against Leicester, they scored twenty-one points.

South African Robert Du Preez is their competition’s top-scorer with 174 points which is the second highest scorer in the competition after Paddy Jackson with 205 points. Their top try-scorer is Tom Roebuck with 8 tries.

Saracens Defence

Despite leading the league phase of this competition, Saracens do not have the most watertight of defences conceding 513 points across their 20 league games an average of 25.65 points per match and 78 tries which is only the fifth-best defence in the competition which could be a testament to a more open style of rugby that they like to play.

In their Semi-Final victory against Northampton, they only conceded 15 points though which was impressive given that Northampton were the second-highest scorers during the league phase with 620 points scored.

Saracens Attack

During the Premiership league phase, Saracens had the best attack in the competition scoring 622 points in total across their 20 league games for an average of 31.1 points per match through 78 tries scored. They scored 38 points in their Semi-Final victory against Northampton Saints.

Their top-scorer in the tournament has been Owen Farrell with 140 points and if they win at the weekend he will earn the record for most finals won from the starting XV with his 6th title starting at 10. Farrell has started in every title Saracens have won.

Their top try-scorer in the tournament is Max Mallins with 10 followed by Sean Maitland with 9.

Sale Sharks Defence

The strongest area of the Sale Sharks side is their watertight defence which has only conceded 435 points for an average of 21.75 points per match. That makes Sale the best defence in the competition with only 53 tries conceded.

In their Semi-Final against Leicester, they continued their strong defensive unit only conceding 13 points despite them coming up against the competition’s third-best attack. If Sale Sharks are going to pull off a minor upset at the weekend they will need to keep their defensive momentum.

Sale Sharks V Saracens Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: Sale Sharks 15- 24 Saracens

This will be a tough fixture putting the more open-ended style of Saracens against the more defensively solid Sale Sharks.

I don’t suspect either side to run away with this one and it could very well end up being a 1 or 2-score victory, but I think the experience of Saracens against higher-quality opposition in Europe this season will pull them through.

Best Bet: Half-Time/Full-Time – Draw/Saracens @ 20/1
