Sevilla v Man United Odds

Sevilla has been installed as underdogs despite home status and their excellent European record at 13/5 ahead of this game

Man United are installed as the strong EVS favourite. This indicates that our oddsmakers are expecting a strong reaction from the team following their last 10-minute collapse in the first leg to squander their 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 at home.

With the bigger picture in mind of Europa League progression, Man United are strong favourites at 8/15 to qualify for the semi-finals. On the other hand, Sevilla are 7/5 to make it through to the next round of Europe’s second tier club competition.

The Form – Sevilla v Man United

Sevilla’s Form

In terms of this competition, nobody does it better than Sevilla, having won the UEFA Europa League six times which is more than any club with their most recent success coming in 2020 when they beat Inter Milan.

Despite a poor league season, where they are currently languishing in 12th in La Liga, they’re unbeaten in their last three league matches with two wins and one draw most recently having won 2-0 away against Valencia at the weekend.

Sevilla will be hopeful of overturning Man United in the second leg, as despite a poor first-half performance they were able to score in the 84th and 92nd minute to earn themselves a draw heading into the home leg.

Man United’s Form

While historically considered a “Champions League Team” in recent years Manchester United have struggled to compete at the top level of European Football. However, in the Europa League they have been regular contenders. United won the competition in the 2016-17 season and lost the 2020-21 final to Villarreal on penalties.

Manchester United enter this clash on the back of their comprehensive 2-0 away victory over relegation-threatened Nottingham Forrest. Erik Ten Hag’s side created 3.5XG to their opponents’ 0.7 at the weekend in that game against Forest. This was a huge boost in their hopes to qualify for next seasons Champions League as they are now third with eight games to play.

Following their collapse in the first-leg from a series of unfortunate events which included multiple injuries and two own-goals, they will be looking to set the record straight and finish the job in Spain Thursday night.

Sevilla v Man United Preview

Sevilla’s Attack

Recently appointed manager José Luis Mendilibar made the strange call to drop star striker Youssef En-Nesyri (who has 14 goals this season) in favour of former Tottenham winger Erik Lamela.

En-Nesyri would be subbed on for Lamela in the 66th minute before the comeback so I’d expect him to start for this leg after being subbed off at the weekend in La Liga.

Sevilla got an awful lot of joy in the first leg by exploiting Tyrell Malacia on Manchester United’s left-hand side with Ocampos being their standout performer. Expect them to give the ball to him at every available opportunity to try and profit the same vs Malacia or even Luke Shaw or Diogo Dalot in this game.

Man United’s Defence

Man United went from a back-four with the impenetrable pairing of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez to finishing the second-leg with Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof at CB, which coincided with their dramatic collapse.

With Varane and Martinez out again, it remains to be seen who will start at the heart of the defence, but I suspect it could be Maguire along with a returning Luke Shaw.

Down the flanks they have proven weakest this season, but a resurgent Wan-Bissaka looks to have brought some defensive stability and awareness on the right.

However, Malacia was extremely poor in the first-leg and his spot is not guaranteed on Thursday especially with the solid performance Diogo Dalot had at the weekend. Don’t be surprised to see him feature instead of Malacia for this game.

Man United’s Attack

With the likes of starman Marcus Rashford and teen-sensation Alejandro Garnacho still out of this clash through injury it’s likely to be a front-three of Antony, Sancho and Martial leading the line on Thursday evening.

However, all three players have shown some promising signs in terms of form recently which has lessened the pressure the club could have had with injuries.

Antony was excellent at the weekend with a goal and an assist against Nottingham Forrest. There are also signs that Sancho is starting to grow in confidence again and a fit Martial has been a much better link-man and goal threat then Wout Weghorst since returning from injury.

Sevilla’s Defence

Sevilla back four were under the cosh in the first-half with the link up play between Sabitzer, Martial and Antony proving too quick and intricate for them to handle. Although big changes on the 62nd minute disjointed the Man United attack and they troubled managed to trouble the Sevilla defence less and less as the game dragged on.

One point of notice during the first leg was how aggressive Sevilla were in the tackle. They constantly tried to rough up the Man United attack which saw them receiving five yellow-cards. I’d expect them to do more of the same in the second-leg.

Sevilla v Man United Prediction

Prediction: Sevilla 1-3 Manchester United

Manchester United have struggled against Sevilla previously having played four matches without victory in major European Competitions. Two draws and two defeats is United’s record against the Spanish outfit.

They will want to set that record straight and earn a place in the Europa League semi-finals and I expect them to do just that although the game won’t come without its challenges. Both teams should score.
