We recently caught up with former Celtic manager Gordon Strachan and took the opportunity to ask him about the icon status of current manager Ange Postecoglou.

Do you think Ange Postecoglou can gain a bigger icon status at Celtic than the likes of Neil Lennon and Martin O’Neil?

There’s only one Jock Stein and no one will be able to replicate what he did.

What I have to say about Ange is that I don’t think any of Brendan Rodgers, Martin O’Neil or Neil Lennon’s teams bought a consistency of joy than what Postecoglou has with his team.

I don’t think Celtic have been so consistently enjoyable to watch as Postecoglou’s team. Also, Ange has no worries about who plays for Celtic; as long as they do what he says and they play in the manner that he wants them to play in.

Celtic lost the likes of Tom Rogic and the manager has just added new heroes to the team. Maeda, Jota, Carter-Vickers and Juranovic to name a few.

There will always be players that want to play for Celtic. There will always be new heroes.

Two of your former clubs Southampton and Leeds are currently embroiled in a relegation battle. Can either of them stay in the Premier League?

I think Leeds will be fine. I went to the game on Friday night and they should count themselves very unlucky because they were the better team. Leeds have enough in their squad to stay up. The enthusiasm and application is first-class.

For Nathan Jones and Southampton, you have to worry if James Ward Prowse gets injured. He’s the heartbeat of the team and the goalscorer – every time Southampton have a free-kick, the football world comes to a stand-still.

If James stays fit then hopefully they’ll be able to stay up.

What do you make of certain fans comparing Ward Prowse to David Beckham?

James Ward Prowse doesn’t just perform when the ball is static, he can deliver moving balls too. I remember he delivered two crosses against Tottenham recently that nobody saw coming. I show that kind of thing to the youngsters at Dundee United. James is now and again involved in our academy learning at Dundee [United].

David Beckham played in a different position and with far better players, that’s for sure. Ward-Prowse has talent. Real talent. I think James is one of those players that, when he packs in football, he’ll be able to say ‘I have no regrets.’
